Egyptian Hieroglyphics Translator
The Hieroglyphics Translator is a powerful tool that allows you to convert English text into ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. Simply type or paste your text into the input box and watch as it is transformed into the symbols used by ancient Egyptians.
Important Notes
- Phonetic Translation: This translator performs a phonetic transliteration, converting English sounds to their closest hieroglyphic equivalents. The Egyptian "alphabet" was never official, but it included about 24 symbols representing simple vocal sounds, known as unilaterals.
- Unilaterals Only: The translator focuses on the 24 basic unilaterals, as they are the most common sounds. Higher-level symbols like trilaterals, which represent combinations of sounds, are not included due to their complexity.
- Omission of Vowels: Hieroglyphics often omit vowels, and readers are expected to infer them. This is a common feature in many ancient writing systems.
- Directional Reading: While the direction of reading varied historically, this translator uses left-to-right for simplicity. It's important to note that animal and human hieroglyphs must face the start of the line, opposite to the reading direction.

The ancient Egyptians created hieroglyphs shortly before 3100 B.C.E. and used the script for almost 4000 years. Hieroglyphs were written on papyrus, carved in stone on walls, and used to decorate many objects of daily life. There are over 700 different hieroglyphs, some representing sounds or syllables, and others serving as determinatives to clarify the meaning of a word.
